‘Told Shoaib Malik to take retirement to avoid humiliation, but he didn’t listen’

Former Pakistan all-rounder Mohammad Hafeez isn’t happy with the way Pakistan Cricket Board has treated Shoaib Malik. He was ignored for the Asia Cup 2022 and the ICC T20 World Cup.

Hafeez lauded Malik for his fitness and for playing top-level cricket for over two decades.

“Malik has given his best for Pakistan for about 21-22 years. He has maintained his fitness, which is remarkable,” Hafeez was quoted as saying to Cricket Pakistan.

“I told Malik to take retirement along with me, but he didn’t listen. He wanted one last standing, but cricket is cruel at times,” he added.

Malik last represented Pakistan in ODI cricket during the World Cup in 2019.

“Even when he announced the retirement from one-day internationals, he was not given a farewell match. Our management has always been lacking in this aspect.”

In 35 Tests, 287 ODIs and 124 T20Is, Malik accumulated 1898, 7534 and 2435 respectively, laced with 12 centuries and 61 half-centuries.
