India pacer Shardul Thakur took 7 wickets in two telling bursts to dismiss South Africa for 229 in its first innings on the second day of the second test on Tuesday. Even Indian greats like Kapil Dev, Anil Kumble and Zaheer Khan couldn’t take seven wickets in an innings in the Rainbow nation.
Thakur had three wickets in quick succession before lunch to send South Africa from a strong position at 88-1 to 102-4.
He made another 4 crucial breakthroughs. Thakur got rid of Temba Bavuma and Kyle Verreynne in the space of two overs, with Bavuma out for 51 caught down the leg side by wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant. That gave Thakur his fifth, and Mohammed Shami added the wicket of Kagiso Rabada to give India the session.
Thakur came back to dismiss Marco Jansen and Lungi Ngidi to complete seven wickets. He holds the record for best figures by an Indian against the Proteas. The right-arm pacer surpassed R Ashwin, who took 7/66 in Nagpur in the 2015-16 season.
Harbhajan Singh has two seven-wicket hauls against the Proteas. Bhajji took 7/87 in Kolkata in 2004-05 and 7-120 in Cape Town in 2010/11.
India won the first test of the three-match series by 113 runs, and victory at the Wanderers would give the top-ranked test team its first test series win in South Africa.
