SA vs IND: Why was Elgar given not out despite Ultra Edge showing a massive spike

Dean Elgar survived a close caught behind decision on Day 2 of the 2nd Test between India and South Africa at the Wanderers stadium in Johannesburg. Elgar, batting on 11, edged a delivery from Jasprit Bumrah to Rishabh Pant.

The two on-field umpires referred the decision to the TV umpire Adrian Holdstock with the soft signal being out. As Holdstock looked at replays, he got enough evidence to overturn the decision.

The ball had touched the bat’s edge but it had bumped into the ground before landing in the gloves of the Indian wicket-keeper.

There was a big spike on ultra edge, which occurred as the ball went past the Dean’s bat but it was due to willow hitting the ground.

After a frame-by-frame analysis, it was concluded that the ball had taken the edge, bumped into the ground before landing in Pant’s gloves. Adrian Holdstock overturned the decision.
