Root dethrones Williamson, becomes number one Test batsman after six years

Joe Root, who is has been in sensational form against India, is the new number one batsman in the ICC Men’s Test Player rankings for batting. The England skipper has scored three centuries in the ongoing series against the Virat Kohli-led team.

He has accumulated 507 runs at an average of 126.75. Root has dethroned New Zealand captain Kane Williamson to return to the top after six years.

Root was fifth when the series against India started, but his exceptional run has seen him overtake his rivals in the charts.

Meanwhile, Rohit Sharma has been the biggest gainer from the Indian side. He has surpassed Virat Kohli to jump into the top five batsmen’s rankings.

England pacer James Anderson has moved into the top five. With the fourth Test at the Oval starting on Thursday, there will be opportunities for players to improve their rankings in the coming weeks.
