Rohit Sharma to captain India in a Test match
Rohit Sharma is likely to lead India in the first Test match against New Zealand as the regular skipper Virat Kohli has asked the BCCI for an extended break. Virat is expected to join the team for the second Test. The national cricket wants Rohit to lead the side and Ajinkya Rahane, who is the vice-captain in the longest format of the team, will continue in his role.
Earlier, Rahane has led India in the absence of Virat but the governing body of Indian cricket is willing to try something different.
According to Inside Sport, Virat will be spending time with his family.
A senior BCCI official said, “Virat Kohli has requested for additional days off. We expect him to join the team in Mumbai for the 2nd Test. He has earned the break. He needs some free time to focus on himself. Spending some time with the family will definitely help”.
Meanwhile, Virat has already stepped down from his post in T20ls after the ICC T20 World Cup and is he could be asked to leave the ODI captaincy as well considering the 50-over World Cup in mind. The BCCI and the national selectors are expected to take a call regarding Virat’s future in the coming days.
